Visual_Reasonings

projects in visual cognitive modeling, visual essays & visual poetry

These are projects that in one way or another contain elements in visual reasoning:

visual cognitive modeling, visual politics, visual essays, and visual poetry.

Visual Reasoning is often associated with the ability to analyze visual information to solve problems. But it is more than that. It relates to our ability to interact with spatial, material and social visual worlds as a way to generate understandings, insights, promote communication, narratives, discourses, and much more. It represents a non-linear language that requires learning efforts for one to achieve higher levels of (visual) literacy.

In my own work with visual reasoning, I focus on matters associated to visual cognitive modeling, visual politics, visual essays and visual poetry. The boundaries between these different areas within visual reasoning may not be absolute. But they are noteworthy.

Visual Cognitive Modeling reflects a more formal methodology that combines insights from knowledge representation, concept systems, network analysis and cognitive modeling. It presents itself as a language for visually displaying logical constructions and analytical contents embedded in cognitive reasoning.

Visual Politics emphasizes visual literacy. It explores matters related to the nature of visual sensorial processes responsible for the reception of light inputs, how they are digested and conceptualized through the endless process of construction and re-constructions of mental models. It also covers the way visual elements are socially manipulated as mediums behind narratives, political discourses and consumption.

Visual Essays combine my photography with my writings on different topics, usually structured through video projects. These projects may not have the formal nature of academic research, but they tend to reflect my interest on topics of international relations, global studies, politics and social issues.

Visual Poetry is my "free-style" work, emphasizing language, communication, as well as the way in which artistic expressions combine written and visual languages in a cohesive manner.

Ultimately, in each and all of these areas I work at the intersection of academic research, education, and art.
